Having a voice to the media and industry is very valuable to me and whatever I choose to do in the future I intend to make a difference and not be afraid to voice my opinion. Saying this here are seven time celebrities used their voice through fashion to make a statement, change and impact the people around them…
One- 2018 Golden Globes
All the women of 2018 at the golden globes wore black to support the #metoo movement about Harvey Weinstein’s sexual harassment and allegations in the workplace. This gathered huge support from big names which evidentially moved the cases forward and played a part in the prosecution in 2021.
Two- 2021 Tax the Rich Dress at the Met gala.
This ‘TAX THE RICH’ statement was bold and said it all in the statement. It was eye-catching and extravagant especially for the NYC candidates that were invited to the Met Gala. This ordered change for childcare , health care and the climate crisis and it worked got people talking.
Three- 1992 Oscars Elizabeth Taylor wears an Aids Awareness ribbon.
Earning a humanitarian award a year later in 1993 for her aids activism Elizabeth Taylor wasn’t thinking of the awards when trying to share the message of the crisis of the time which was effecting thousands of peoples lives. With speaking a strong message of kindness, dignity and respect towards every human being.
Four- 2019 Stormzy’s Glastonbury headline look.
Being the first Black Headline act at Glastonbury Stormzy decided to use his voice with an issue very close to home. Knife crime is a big part of London culture and a massive issue so wearing a bullet proof vest with the union jack on it symbolised the rejection against it he feels. Collaborating with Banksy using a police vest for this look to bring attention to the in diversity within the justice system and again demanding a change. It was powerful and held lots of different messages which was spread to millions broadcasted over the UK.
Five – 2019 AMA Billie Eilish Graphic Tee.
The American music awards are filled with the most influential music artists of the year so is the perfect place to bring awareness to an issue that would influence them personally. The statement ‘No music on a Dead planet’ instantly brings focus to the climate crisis of the moment and holds the people there responsible for making a change. Much like the ‘tax the rich’ dress this looks is clear and bold, being straight to the point.
Six- Tracee Ellis Rose 2018 AMA’s .
Being the host this year meant lots of screen time for Tracee so the perfect opportunity to make a statement. ‘I am a Voter’ is a bold and to the point statement which spreads awareness to registering to vote and a simple reminder not to controversial or in your face which could have the opposite effect on people and repel them.
Seven – 2014 NBA tribute to Eric Garner.
A tribute to the awful suffocation and homicide of Eric Garner an African-American man killed by the US police force illegally held in a chokehold. This case shocked many due to the exploitation and clear inequality of the police force and the way they dealt with this situation. This simple printed tee message ‘ I CAN’T BREATH’ exposed the issue to the media and showed the fight for equality that is still needed worldwide. This is one of the first times NBA has commented on an issue but this meant so much to the players it was important to represent.
